Audience of One: Theatrical Photography in the Pandemic

May 11, 2021

Thoughts and photos from the year end performances at UCalgary’s School of Creative and Performing Arts - the only company I work with that has produced staged work in 2021 so far, and whose creative solutions to mandated distancing continuously blew me away. Celebrating the resilience of the performing arts community.

One Year Later: Reflecting on a Completely Changed Career and Mindset

April 21, 2021

Reflecting on the past year, this homage to Sam Haskins was my first real piece of pandemic art - and it hasn’t stopped since then. I’ve been one of the few and truly fortunate artists in Calgary this past year that have been able to say things have only improved.

CBC Photo Essay: Dance and Mental Health

April 3, 2021

I was commissioned to create a photo essay for the CBC on the topic of my choosing. The request was for local stories from the Calgary community - something I’m passionate about. As ‘the arts guy,’ I immediately looked to performing arts for inspiration.

And a big shoutout to Platinum Winner - Angie Anderson Photography! While I’ve only had the pleasure of meeting Angie once, I’ve been following her boudoir business for a while now and she does some seriously great work. Check here out here.

Happy Tuesday everyone! :)

February 2, 2021

CUBE (2021) is a personal exploration of emotional states as they relate to re-learning how the world worked in the early stages of the pandemic. Isolation, anxiety, existentialism, and claustrophobia examined through dance and movement; exacerbated and distorted through use of an ultra wide angle lens. An un-reality developed to look inward.

Pictures of the Year: Theatre in 2020

January 25, 2021

Art finds a way. Reflecting on the best work of the abridged theatrical season in Calgary. This gallery is a testament to the perseverance a community of people that love what they do and who’s work was suddenly interrupted.

Bring on 2021

January 4, 2021

I feel like one of the incredibly small number of fortunate people that gets to look back on 2020 and call it a GREAT year overall… I got married, was named Best of Calgary’s Best Photographer, taught Lightroom for the first time, produced my first play, received my first Arts grant, released three years worth of backlogged creative work, and much more…

My First Lighting Kit

December 30, 2020

A friend asked me for an opinion on a cheap lighting kit she’d found, almost embarrassed to admit that it was what she was looking at. It reminded me a lot of where I got started with lighting ,and so I wanted to share that story.

Like Tom Cruise Loves Running: Reflecting on Live Performance during the Pandemic

September 21, 2020

The whole pitch for doing Like Tom Cruise Loves Running into 2020 was “we’ve got this play, its a three-hander, its age and gender neutral, and they each stay inside of a tape square on the floor.”

Lumination's Custom Road Cases

June 27, 2020

I was almost positive that I was going to lose my studio due to the covid shutdown. Plans were set in motion to start paring down equipment, and other parts were earmarked for storage. The most difficult element to work out though was what the hell to do with the 500lbs of aluminum and acrylic that makes up my Lumination set?

The Artists That Move Me

June 25, 2020

Without really realizing it, I’ve made a career out of admiring and documenting fellow artists - on stage, online, in class, and everywhere. From an arms length, there’s almost always been a component of my work that has been directed to celebrate others.

An Homage to Sam Haskins

May 9, 2020

Its fitting that this ended up being the last creative in my studio: a long term goal, a model shoot, and a self portrait. A vanity project, of which I seldom gravitate toward. Inspired and guided by creative influences on many levels.
